Review: Mum’s Boredom Buster Guide

Just in time for the school holidays, here is an eBook from Fiona Hall – The Household Tamer: “Mum’s Boredom Buster Guide – How to Survive the School Holidays”.

Now I am lucky enough to be one of those Mum’s that love the school holidays – no school and kindy runs, no racing out the door to be places at a certain time, no waking sleeping children for school pick-up.  Most school holidays I entertain the idea of homeschooling so that I can keep the peaceful natural rhythm and routine in our days.

The hardest thing for most Mum’s (including me) in the holidays though is finding a bit of time for themselves.  This is where Mum’s Boredom Buster Guide comes in.  I have found with my own children that it is often the simplest of things that can entertain children for ages, or at least long enough to stop the pestering and get some time for a nice cold drink in the shade.  Fiona obviously gets this too, as her suggestions for at-home activities are simple, mostly free, and suit a reasonable age range (most activities would be adaptable to be suitable for ages 3-10).

The layout and design of the book is fun, visual, and easy to follow.  One useful feature is the Messy Play Alert, warning you which activities to stay away from when you are just not in the mood.  You know those days…

The first section of the book is full of really useful information, tips, and templates to allow you to plan your holidays.  It can be very tempting to throw all planning out the window when it comes to the holidays, but the age old saying always rings true “fail to plan = plan to fail”.  Failing to plan – not usually an issue for me as I manage to drive some people crazy with the level of planning I do (you should have heard my mother over the amount of planning I did to take our family to the States last year, but I promise you there was never one time on that trip that we said ‘I wish we hadn’t planned so much’).

The planning section includes great tips for budgeting and suggestions for getting the children involved with the budget at age appropriate levels – love it!
